STEM is the acronym for Science, Technology, Engineering and Math education, it is mostly a Caucasian male dominated field but one woman is opening doors and breaking grounds in race disparity when it comes to STEM research. Twenty eight old Maci Peterson is a former Spelman student, who hopes to inspire other African-American women and men like herself, to enter the field and innovate it.
Maci Peterson is the mastermind and creater of On Second Thought which is an app that allows people to take back text messages. You know how you sometimes send a embarrasing text, maybe by mistake to a family member or maybe you changed your mind after you pushed the send button; well that's where Maci comes in and changed all that.
In an interview with Black Enterprise, Maci Peterson explained the mechanism of the app, its many features and even a program in it called "curfew," for people who had too much to drink and it prevents them from sending drunk and embarassing text messages.
"On Second Thought is very easy to use. After downloading the app from the Google Play Store, you go to the app’s settings, set On Second Thought as your default SMS app and determine the length of your “grace period”—up to 60 seconds. The “grace period” is the amount of time you have to swipe left and Ost (recall) a message after hitting “send.”
Another feature in development is “curfew.” It’s for those nights on the town when you know you might have a bit too much to drink. Just go to your On Second Thought settings, determine the time you’d like your “curfew” to start, and all messages you try to send after that time will be held until the next morning. Once the “curfew” expires, you can look back and see which messages you still want to send, and which ones you’re thankful didn’t go through."
The 28 year old genius is approaching her 5,000 user mark for the app and hopes it grows. Maci Peterson continues in her research in STEM and stated she is creating and developing more apps and even inventions which will enhance technology.
You go Maci! ASalute and Godspeed!
