The 2016 NFL Top 100 list done by the NFL Network was unveiled last week, and as expected, there were some players that fans felt were ranked too high or too low, and others they believed were snubbed. While this list has nothing to do with the NFL odds for next season, the football season is still a couple of months away, and fans need something to keep them busy.
The Pittsburgh Steelers had four players named on the list, but as expected, Steelers fans feel there were a few players that should have been on the list but were not. Since the list is done by players, it is hard to blame the NFL Network for not having more Steelers on the list.
Antonio Brown was the top ranked Steelers player at number four, behind Cam Newton, Tom Brady, and J.J. Watt. For Brown, who was a sixth round pick, it shows how far he has come and how much work he has put into his craft.
Despite dealing with injuries all year long, Brown finished with 136 catches for 1,834 and 10 touchdowns, and was the best receiver in the game last year.
The second highest ranked Steeler was Ben Roethlisberger, who came in at 21. Big Ben has been one of the top quarterbacks in the league for some time, and is usually ranked higher than 21 on the list. However, he was forced to miss a few games last year, which caused his drop in the list.
The next Pittsburgh player on the list is LeVeon Bell, who came in at 46. Like Roethlisberger, Bell did not play in all 16 games because of injury issues. When he was healthy, Bell showed he was one of the best running backs in the NFL, but he has been unlucky with injuries in the past couple of seasons. If Bell is healthy this year, look for him to be ranked much higher than 46 when the list comes out next year.
The last Pittsburgh player on the list is Cam Heyward, who came in at 88. Heyward is considered by a lot of people to be one of the best defensive ends in the league, but he hasn’t been getting as much recognition because players like J.J. Watt are doing some unreal things at the position.
Heyward finally got some recognition for his hard work by being included in the list, and look for him to improve his ranking next season.
Now it’s time to take a look at some of the snubs. David DeCastro is one of the best guards in the NFL, but since guards rarely get the recognition they deserve, it isn’t that big of a surprise that he was left off the list. DeCastro was an All-Pro guard this year, so hopefully his peers recognize his talent next year.
Marcus Gilbert is another player that should have been recognized, but since he is an offensive lineman like DeCastro, it’s not surprising that he isn’t.
Kelvin Beachum is another offensive lineman that was snubbed, which brings the total to three. Beachum is considered the best lineman the Steelers have, and should receive credit for his skills. Even Madden has him rated at 94, so the players need to start showing the big men some love when they vote next year.
